Sgt. Gerald V. "Guppy" Glenn

Sgt. Gerald V. "Guppy" Glenn served his country with distinction as a member of Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 364 (HMM-364) during 1963 - 1966 and deployed to Vietnam with the squadron twice during this time frame.  Then again in 1970, he served with HMM-364 as a SSgt.

During his second deployment he was the crew chief of a UH-34D that was lost in the South China Sea resulting in the loss of Cpl. John Thomas Corle who was serving as an aerial gunner on Sgt. Glenn's aircraft.  Glenn carried this loss with a heavy heart the rest of his life feeling he did not do enough to save Cpl. Corle.  From all accounts of what happened that day, none of those involved have ever indicated there was anything Sgt. Glenn could have done to make a difference.  It is unfortunate that Glenn could not be convinced he was not at fault for the loss of Cpl. Corle.  This incident can be read by clicking the following link: UH-34 Lost in the South China Sea

Prior to retiring as a GySgt., Glenn had served a total of four tours in Vietnam and earned the following decorations; 10 Air Medals (strike flight awards), Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Citation, National Defense Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal w/5 stars, and the Vietnamese Campaign Medal.

Having been certified as a Private Pilot prior to entering the Marine Corps, Glenn continued in the aviation field as a pilot flying several types of helicopters and fixed wing aircraft to include logging and other heavy lift operations in helicopters and flying the B-17 in forest fire operations.

On September 26, 2007, "Guppy" was with Jacqueline, his wife, on an airplane flying west to join with other Purple Foxes at a reunion in Mesquite, NV.  While in the air he met a Marine, Joe Sharp, on leave and recovering from wounds he had received in Iraq.  While talking to this Marine, "Guppy" suffered a massive heart attack and died instantly.

Survivors include his wife Jacqueline; a son and daughter-in-law, GySgt. Philip and Tracy Glenn of Lawton; 4 grandchildren, Alexandria, Paige, Stephany and Jessica; and many Marines and friends.
