Lt. Thomas was killed on 20 January 1968 during combat operations which
immediately preceded the Siege of Khe Sanh. His
Navy Cross citation can be read here.

the Inspector General of the Division was not expected to visit the hill.
From 20 January on there was no safe time for policing the hill.
