Picuture looking up the hill
from the C/1/13 XO pit to the FDC bunker on the left of the picture.
Taken the day after the FDC bunker took an 82 mortar round through the
roof. Of the 4 Marines inside, 2ndLt. Leslie M. Palm, Sgt. William
Hubbard, PFC Gary L. Riley and one other Marine, only PFC Riley was injured.

after they were released from a jet trying to drop on an NVA position.
Elements of I/3/26 were in contact with dug in NVA force. Either

Cpl. Joseph Y. "Jody" Hawkins arrived in country in
Sept. 1967. His CO noted his size and directed him to become a M-60
machine gunner. When he arrived on Hill 881S he was designated a
.50 caliber machine gunner.
