Captain William H. Dabney, CO I/3/26 and OIC, 881S
monitoring close air support missions - Jan '68. Ship's binoculars
in back- ground were essential to target aquisition. Using
those binoculars, Cpl. "Mike" Niuatoa found an NVA 130mm gun battery
over 10 km west of the hill (he spotted the muzzle flash when they
fired). Air strikes using his directions destroyed several
guns.

VERY near miss in 881S trenchline! Round struck
on top of left parapet. Both Marines taking shelter and photographer
were lucky. Had it landed six inches further to the right,
both would likely have been killed. Marine in photo was probably
wounded by blast, shrapnel or both. Sandbag barrier in background
was one of many erected in trenchline to prevent multiple casualties
when round impacted in trench. Disadvantage was that barriers
made carrying stretchers for any distance in trenchline impossible.
