Cpl. Spear believes this UH-34 of HMM-163 was shot down on this approach to the hill.  It was later wrapped in detonating wire by the NVA and blown up right below his 105 Howitzer emplacement.

I came across this in 1969  while reading a "Newsweek" magazine at a dentist's office. In the  back ground I am playing chess with a lieutenant who was with a  sniper unit. I have always thought his name was Johnson but cannot be  sure. The marine in the foreground in the trench was nick named "Dum- Dum" and was returning to India Co.  Col. Dabney recalls he was returning after being  evacuated for a shrapnel wound to his thigh. "I remember him running to the medevac bird with blood spurting from his leg with each step. Good Marine!"
