Hill 881S

India defended right end, Mike the left end as you look at the picture.  View is from south of hill.  Most landing zones were on right end or in the saddle between the two company positions, which is why India tended to suffer more mortar casualties than Mike.  Sniper casualties, which were not as frequent or as traumatic (since they were single casualty incidents) tended to be about the same on both ends.

Incidentally, the errant Air Force CAS, mentioned before, was coming left to right (west to east) along the ridge line when he dropped.  His bombs hit just north of hill about mid-saddle (center of photograph), about 50 yards down slope.  Damned glad he missed!    Would have had 100 casualties if he'd hit what he was aiming at, including myself, Arrotta and Chunk.  The FAC position we were standing on was approximately 75 meters straight-line from the bombs point of impact.  For 500 pounders, that's close - trust me.  The impact was a bit closer to Mike's position which caved in one of their machine gun bunkers.  This FAC position was chosen because most good targets were north (towards and on 881N) and west (rocket sites, AA positions).  He blew out a bunch of our defensive wire that the troops had to repair that night.  Still angry!
